Wellness Program Frequently Asked Questions

 

The San Mateo Union High School District’s School-Based Mental Health and Wellness Program provides prevention and short-term intervention services for all students facing social and emotional challenges that impact academic performance, attendance, and behavior at school.

What is the role of a Wellness Counselor?
The Wellness Counselors collaborate with school personnel, students and families to provide counseling support services to students.

What is the difference between a Wellness Counselor and a School Counselor?
While there is some overlap, School Counselors help students to navigate schedules, discuss academic concerns, and assist students and families with learning accommodations.  Wellness Counselors address social and emotional needs that can stem from academic stress, strained peer and family relationships, or other pressures teenagers face.

Who qualifies for services?
Any student who is enrolled at AHS may be referred.

How do students access services?
Please start by contacting your student’s school counselor.

Where and when are services provided?
Wellness counselors are available to provide virtual sessions Monday through Friday during school hours 8am-3pm

How can my student access drop-in support?
All wellness counselors have designated drop-in hours, available for all students. See our website for further details.  

How long are individual or group counseling sessions?
Sessions are approximately 40 minutes in length. Group sessions meet 6-8 weeks.

What if my student needs more than 12 individual sessions?
The Wellness Counselor will assist the student and family with referral(s) to community resources for additional support.
