The San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) recently announced that several SMUHSD affiliated groups and students were recognized at the Climate Ready Schools Symposium on April 30.

Aragon High’s Brandon Lin was also recognized as a Standout Award Winner for his ReCap Project. The ReCap Project takes clean syringe needle caps and other clean small medical plastic waste and process them into useful products such as clipboards.

And the San Mateo County Youth Commission's Environmental Justice Subcommittee (which includes AHS students) was recognized for their plastic waste reduction project. This group of students has been advocating for compostable or reusable food ware since the beginning of the school year. They have created a petition, hosted waste-awareness events, and presented at the April 25 SMUHSD Board meeting. Aragon students Matthew Lau and Zayne Abraham accepted the award on behalf of the Commission.

The SCRS Challenge identifies students, teachers, administrators, and community members who are driving environmentally sustainable transformation across their school community’s Campus, Curriculum, and Community engagement programs.

Congratulations to Aragon High Class of 2024’s Gabe Anagnoson - he was named the San Mateo Daily Journal Boys Swimmer of the Year.

“When it comes to elite swimmers competing at the high school level, it’s not uncommon to see them spend more time training with their club teams than their high school teams.

Most high school coaches implement a rule that a club swimmer has to be at the school practice the day before in order to compete in a high school meet.

But every now and then you’ll get that elite swimmer who enjoys the time with their high school teammates and makes a concerted effort to be available to people who may not only be teammates, but also friends.

Aragon’s Gabe Anagnoson was one of those swimmers. A backstroker and individual medley swimmer, Anagnoson was known to swim in a morning practice for his Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics (PASA) club and then be in the Aragon pool for more training in the afternoon.”
